How to Make Friends at Work!

Posted on Monday, Jul 16, 2018

Have you ever been worried that you won’t be able to make any friends at work? I know that your PPIP cohort and your roommates are all that you will ever need for the whole summer, but it is so nice to have some friends at your office who are willing to help you out, give you advice, and walk to the metro stop with after work. I love hanging out with my PPIP roommates, but my work friends are a group of people who come from different schools and backgrounds. They offer different perspectives than my roommates, and I see them every day at work so it’s a good idea to get to know them and interact with them socially.

Here are some ways that you can get to know and befriend your co-interns:
  • Find fun activities around Washington, D.C. that you can do together (such as the Congressional Baseball Game)
  • Attend receptions after the work day together (especially ones where you will have the opportunity to meet Members of Congress such as Rep. Beto O’Rourke.
  • When you need help, ask them for help. And when they need help, be sure to lend a hand if you can. (Especially if you’re like me, and you get lost in your own office building— ask your friend from work to walk you around the building a couple of times to help you!)

It is so refreshing to have people who encourage you when you need encouragement at work. My work friends have made my experience on my internship much more enjoyable, this summer would not have been the same without them!
