Exploring beyond D.C.

It’s hard to get bored to in D.C. with all its free museums and art galleries. But sometimes, you just want a change of scenery, a change of pace. South of Crystal City is the historic town of Alexandria, Virginia – just a quick metro ride away. This riverside town not only offers great views of the Potomac but also many fun things to check out, some of my favorites listed below.
  1. All the shops!:  Alexandria has tons of little boutique stores and restaurants to check out as you walk along the main street. From bookstores to clothing shops to coffeehouses, each block offers a unique array of things to check out. Some larger chain companies have opened up shop as well, just in case you miss the big city options. The restored old buildings that house all these shops add an extra flair to any Instagram picture.
  2. Torpedo Factory Art Center: This old torpedo factory near the water served as an anchor in the restoration of Old Town Alexandria. Now transformed into an artists’ showroom, the factory is home to 82 studios with art ranging from painting to sculptures to jewelry and everything in between. Walking through the galleries is a unique was to discover the talent in Alexandria.
  3. Farmers’ Market: Every Saturday morning from 7 am to noon, there is a farmers’ market in the square along King Street. When the weather is nice, this is a great way to see the city and pick up some fresh produce too!
  4. Free Trolley: Tying together an adventure to Alexandria is the free trolley down King Street which offers a brief historical recap of each stop! This unique little ride will pick you up right by the metro station and carry you all the way down to the river.
