How to Rock a Polar Bear Costume at a Senate Press Conference

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have the “coolest” job ever? Well working on the Protect the Arctic Refuge Campaign through The Wilderness Society would answer that question. A large part of my internship is spent trying to convince senators that protecting the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is the best and clearest choice for the future of the United States. There are many ways we can get our point across – emails, letters, calling offices, dropping off documents to staff, and much more.

However, my personal favorite is attending press conferences on the lawn of the Capitol dressed as a polar bear. There’s no better way to get the attention and curiosity of senators and constituents than dressing up to support your cause. It may seem silly at the time, but after the pictures are taken and the news articles written, more people will begin to understand why we fight so hard for protecting our public lands, especially the Arctic Refuge. Would seeing someone dressed as a polar bear grab your interest? Would you want to know why, and what they were supporting?
