When In DC….Never Turn Down an Event Your Boss Invites You To

Posted on Saturday, Oct 22, 2016

During my second week of work interning with the Department of Justice, my supervisor emailed me asking if I wanted to attend an event she was invited to. She said she would not be able to attend, but thought it might be a good experience for an intern. Without much research of what the event was, I accepted the invitation, partly due to the fact that lunch would be provided!

When I arrived at the event, I was greeted by someone who asked for my name, place of employment, and then handed me a schedule of the speakers for the day. When I glanced around the room I noticed the swarm of sophisticated looking people in suits. I felt like I had walked into a room of some of Washington D.C.’s most important and influential people.

I took my seat in the back row, in front of several news reporters who were there recording the event. Curious as to what this event was all about, I opened the schedule to find out one of the first speakers Hyndman_2.jpgwas Attorney General Loretta Lynch.  I couldn’t believe I was about to be in the same room as the U.S. Attorney General, nonetheless hear her speak live!

I continued to look over the schedule for the day, to see that at 1:00 the Director of the FBI, Jim Comey would also be speaking, followed by the Director of the CIA, John O. Brennan.

All speakers spoke about the National Security Division of the U.S. Department of Justice that was created after 9/11 to fight against national security threats. It was surreal to listen to these speakers’ insights on national security and how technology is making security threats more prevalent than ever before.

When I returned from the event, I immediately thanked my supervisor for allowing me to attend, and told her I would always be more than happy to fill in for her at other events!
